Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" - Upgrade Android Version

I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade the Android version of my device. It is currently 5.1.1. I've tried to use the steps in a normal software update but it just mentions there are no updates available.

The purpose for me to do this is for me move applications into an external drive or set my external drive as a default.

If the regular software update shows none available then you'd have to search for a ROM developed by a 3rd-party as Samsung likely hasn't released one. XDA is a commonly-suggested source for those but going that route isn't without pitfalls or risks.
