my ubuntus password can't be reseted using root shell prompt.

I forgat my ubuntus password so I tried to reset it by booting into the recovery mode then drop to root shell prompt then after that remount the root with write access but when i tried to type in it let type,I can't type any word because the input is not working.so can you help me
