Google recently developed or started to develop a version of Android OS suitable for such phones, but I don’t know what happened to it.

Because the apps, and the OS are built around a touch interface?

How would you propose to select items on the screen if it's a display only? I guess you could try the old BlackBerry Track Pad with on-screen curser. Then, you would need to add a physical dial pad, because, I assume you would still want to use this thing as a phone.

Welcome to Android Central! The question here is why would anyone do that, if the whole form factor of a smartphone is with touch interface? The closest you could get to that is Android TV.

If you're having trouble with your touchscreen, then you could try connecting a basic USB mouse via OTG cable.
