XiaoMi Redmi Note 8 - unable to make in app purchases

I've had my XiaoMi since September last year. Never had any problems with it, but recently it's completely unable to make in-app purchases. When I try to press "purchase", a black horizontal bar shoots down my screen and nothing happens. Some apps immediately say "payment failed", some say "Google Play Billing Service is not available right now".
Any ideas on how to fix this?

My Google Play Services version is currently 20.09.14. You can see what yours is under Settings>Apps; if you don't see it in that list, tap Menu>Show System.

It's true that the phone isn't a Google certified device, since someone had to manually install Google services. But since the purchases were working before, they might work again with the most updated Play Services. You could try installing the apk from APKMirror, which is a trustworthy site (run by Android Police): https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/
