Possible Transformer Screen Concern (w/pics)
- So I was lucky and was able to pick up a 16GB Transformer at my local Fry's Yesterday. After only a few minutes of use I noticed what I believe is possibly a defect in my unit.
The things that i am concerned with are:
- i can see the volume and power buttons between the screen and the meal housing
- The screen is not evenly seated in the frame all the way around. It is uneven and there is more of a gap between the screen and the gasket on either side.
- The gasket protrudes from the flat surface of the glass and the frame. It also protrudes unevenly as well.
If you could all please look at the pictures below and give me your opinion on these three points:
- If you own a Transformer does yours have a similar issue
- Do think that they are all like this?
- Do you think that I should return it?
I know that the Fry's in my area are out so there is no chance of getting a replacement from them. have another (32GB) on order from B&H that i could potentially just wait for and keep the Fry's unit until just before my return period is up.
You responses an opinions are appreciated. TIA

The gap on the first pic is quite obvious, but not on the third one. Did you do something on the first pic? Oh, and the last two pics are not showing up on me.
My screen is not 100% even/seamless, but I would say it's within the manufacturing tolerance.
If the first pic is more like what you have, then I would return it. That just nasty gap there.
edit: I meant the third picture looks normal.04-30-2011 07:45 PMLike 0 - Yes, the first pic is a close up of the third pic. You can only see the buttons if you catch it at the right angle.
Glad to hear they are not all like that. Thanks for the response.04-30-2011 07:48 PMLike 0 -

- On the left side, the one in pic 1 and 3 I can for the top half of the screen.

- OCD definitely :-) But I am pretty sure that this is not right.

I'm inclined to live with it, as I didn't notice it until reading this thread. Since it's not loose at all, and given the likelihood of not getting a replacement for weeks, I don't mind chalking it up to manufacturing tolerances and moving on.
Maybe if they get the stock up to normal levels by the end of my 30 days, I'll see about an exchange.05-01-2011 09:30 AMLike 0 - Were I you, I would take it back to Fry's, speak to the return's manager and see if they can get you listed in the system for an exchange when they get new stock in. I probably wouldn't return it if they tell you that you have to give them that one now and they'll give you a new some time in the future when they get more in.05-01-2011 11:48 AMLike 0

Mine comes in the mail tomm from TIGER DIRECT and i will look for it now.05-03-2011 10:06 PMLike 0 - Mine has pretty much the same kind of gap running all the way down the left side of my screen. The right side is seamless.
Grrr. Curse you for pointing this out.
JK. It's really not a big deal. As long as no dust makes its way under my screen I'm not concerned about it. If it does, THEN I'll be concerned.05-03-2011 10:57 PMLike 0 - Thanks everyone for the responses. I got lucky....again. I found a 32GB model at a Fry's a little further from my house and went out there last night and made the return/purchase. Went ahead and canceled my B&H order.
Here is a pick of the available storage on the new one, because as they say, pics or it did not happen!05-04-2011 04:56 PMLike 0 - Thanks everyone for the responses. I got lucky....again. When the screen is almost completely dark/black (but still back illuminated I can see light coming in from 3 of the 4 sides of the screen in about 5 different places...). I'd like a replacement, but don't know how long it'll take, especially when reading about Asus' customer service. I've been looking around to see if this a widespread problem, but haven't really seen anyone else with my problem posted anywhere else. Any advice?05-04-2011 08:57 PMLike 0

It is so bad that even in the daytime, with brightness on auto, there is bleed the size of half a quarter totally covering the black bar in the ui. it is present on both the left and right sides in several spots as well.
There is also some sot of dust under the screen near the bottom left that is noticeable all the tine in any light.
Update: Actually realized that this is a grouping of bad pixels all in a bunch. Lovely.
To top it all off, there is a similar gap on the right hand side of the screen to the one that I had on my previous unit (pics in previous posts)
Considering the demand and build issues, I think I may have to throw in the towel on the transformer. Not 100% sure yet, but almost certain I will be looking at the Acer Iconica or just waiting to see what else comes out (hello toshiba).
That being said, there is a good possibility that I will have a brand new dock and brand new asus sleeve for sale next week when the dock arrives.
Thoughts?05-05-2011 04:49 PMLike 0 - Yeah, here's mine. I don't mind the gap, however the light bleed out of the box is unbearable. I just submitted my request for a RMA, we'll se what happens...05-05-2011 11:15 PMLike 0
- That's pretty bad. I know I can see a bit of this when it's a completely static black background, but none I can see during a movie playback even on dark scenes.05-05-2011 11:35 PMLike 0

If you have luck with the RMA process is might give that a go.
Will post up some full device shot of my light bleed in a bit to compare.
