No Update option under About tablet

Asus TF700T running JB 4.1.1. I am trying to update to the latest available for this tablet. There is no option to Update under Settings > About. The first option I see at the top of the About menu is Status.

What I have tried:
Downloaded Eee pad update from Asus and placed once-zipped file in root of SD card folder. Rebooted. Did not pick it up.

Perform a factory reset, but it does not wipe and reboots back to previous.

Ran Recovery from Reboot menu and same result.

Any help?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you rooted? If so, are you still running the stock ROM, or a custom ROM? A custom ROM usually won't give you the option to update the system in the System Settings menu.

Hello. Not rooted and have never updated ROM, which is why I want to do that now.

Just to be clear--you bought the device brand new from a retailer? It wasn't a refurbished or used device?

I have tried that thread also and don't have a CMClient or DMClient listed in apps. I agree the option should be there, but can't find a way to get it back.

I bought the tablet used from Ebay. I can 7-tap on Build and get the easter egg jelly bean. Is there a way to tell if the ROM is custom?

In order for there to be a custom ROM installed, the device has to be rooted. You can check root status by using Root Checker.
