I noticed an interesting thing. the models are slightly different in the US and Japan. How about other markets.

    US--2 models.

    Japan 3 models.

Seems to be a smaller 5.2 inch is sold in Japan, where I live. Gorilla 3.

Then the regular in the US, which I call the deluxe 1 of 2 in Japan

The the true Deluxe, which is called the Deluxe 2 of 2 in Japan.

MODEL ONLY IN JAPAN CALLED ZENFONE 3
    (soon to be released)
    5.2 gorilla Glass 3, Snapdragon 625 2Ghz Adreno 506

    US MODEL ZENFONE
    Zenfone 5.5 gorilla Glass 4, Snapdragon 625 2Ghz Adreno 506

CALLED ZENFONE DELUXE IN JAPAN (seemingly same)

    US
    Zenfone 5.7 gorilla Glass 4, Snapdragon 820/2.15Ghz OR 821 2.4Ghz Adreno 530

Also sold in Japan as a Deluxe model with the 2.4Ghz Adreno 530

Curious, the snapdragon processors seem to have change since an earlier announcement, but what is the difference between the 625 and the 820. And also, why do they have two models in the US for the deluxe--820 and 821?

BTW, no Ultra in japan yet.

The Zenfone 3 lineup is very confusing. It would help the consumer if they adopted a simpler and more intuitive naming policy. For instance here in US I see listed on their website:
    • ZenFone 3 Laser (ZC551KL) with 5.5 inch screen and snapdragon 430
    • ZenFone 3 ‏(ZE520KL)‏ with 5.2 inch screen and snapdragon 625
    • ZenFone 3 ‏(ZE552KL)‏ with 5.2 inch screen and snapdragon 625
    • ZenFone 3 Deluxe (ZS550KL) with 5.5 inch screen and snapdragon 625
    • ZenFone 3 Deluxe (ZS570KL) with 5.7 inch screen and snapdragon 820/821

And this is just a partial list because it is hard to navigate their website. It is organized by phone class, e.g. all the lasers, all the deluxes, etc. including both old and new models; instead of a more logical organization by generation where there is a top level page presenting the complete Zenfone 3 lineup with enough high level information to guide the new user to investigate the details of specific phones that might meet their needs.

I have no idea why the offered the 821 which is just a slight upgrade to the 820. Maybe they are trying to use it as an enticement to by the maxed out memory phone, or a selling point to the person who must have the latest-n-greatest processor, but I think it just adds more confusion.

I have been looking for an international version of the ZF3 and to their credit they list the different frequency bands that are supported but within a given model there looks to be a lot of different versions. I would think it would help their manufacturing and engineering teams to have a few less combinations.I think I found a source for the TW/JP/HK/PH/SG version which I might purchase, but I am still undecided.

Five variants of the ZE520KL/ZE552KL to match different country networks:

    WW version
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20)
    WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 5, 8)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

    ID/IN/TH version
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 8)
    TD-LTE (Band 40)
    WCDMA (Bands 1, 5, 8)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

    TW/JP/HK/PH/SG version
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 18, 19, 26, 28)
    TD-LTE (Bands 38, 39, 40, 41)
    WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 19)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

    US/BR version
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17, 28)
    WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 8)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

    CN version
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8)
    TD-LTE (Bands 38, 39, 40, 41)
    WCDMA (Bands 1, 2, 5, 8)
    TD-SCDMA (Bands 34, 39)
    CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (BC0)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

It looks like Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL is 5 .5 inch (not 5.2).

Also, the ZC551KL with the slower chip has Gorilla Glass 3 as opposed to 4 for the 552KL (which is glass and aluminium as opposed to only aluminium for the former).

Too many combinations as you say.
