Need help finding a new phone!
Hey guys! I'm a regular over at crackberry. I have come to the conclusion that there are no new keyboard devices on the horizon and I would like to sell my RED Key2 while it still has value. I'm not fully ready to give up the pkb, but I know my time is running out. Any recommendations on a new phone that meets the list below? Thanks for your help!
1. Customizable convenience key
2. 6GB / 128 GB with micro SD (exFAT compatible)
3. 6+ inch AMOLED screen
4. Quality cameras, something I have never really had since the PRIV (at best).
5. $500ish price range.
6. Android 10
7. snapdragon 66x or better
8. 4000mah battery or better
9. Fingerprint sensor
10. Stereo speakers
11. Headphone jack
12. Notification LED
13. Metal / nonglass frame

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Hi there, I think most people on this forum including myself will suggest the pixel 3A series. Very affordable, excellent cameras on the pixel phones of course, stock clean Android build. And of course Google pixel phones get the fastest software they straight from Google!
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I like my LG V50. Serves me well in most of your lists. Can be had for an attractive price as well.
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Hello, fellow CrackBerry user! It's good to see you here! Yeah, physical keyboards seem to be going by the wayside, unfortunately... A very sad trend, if I do say so myself.
Pixel is indeed a good option. I've read on here that the 3a line is getting exhausted - there may not be that many left! It's still worth looking into, however.
However, if you can wait a little bit longer, the 4a will hopefully be on the horizon soon. It may not meet your budget but if you do sell your red BB phone in the next bit, that may help.

The V-series in general has some of the best phones around, especially when it comes to the camera and their famed headphone jacks powered from a Quad DAC. If you can stretch your budget, you may find a good deal on the V60 (depending on carrier offers), or possibly get a used one. I've also heard a lot of good things about the LG G8X, but it's not one I've personally looked into.
They won't tick every box on your list, but I'm not aware of any phone that would.

Hi, welcome to AC!

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
As far as I know, the only phones right now with a customizable convenience button are Samsung Galaxy phones (with the Bixby button). The LG V series has a Google Assistant button, but I don't think that can be repurposed.

I can turn it off on my V60. Does that count? Lol

Any idea if there are root solutions for it? Since the OP listed it as #1, I figured it's pretty important to them.

From what I've seen, root isn't available period. Not even sure if anyone is researching it.
EDIT: I'm speaking of the V60 specifically. I haven't looked into the other models.

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I am thinking a Samsung A series like the A71. I think it has the headphone jack. If not the A51 may have. But most of the rest of the speck list could be covered. Just a thought.
And welcome to Android Central

Possibly the Nokia 7.2/ upcoming 7.3? Or look at the ZTE Axon 10. Has almost everything on the list. I remember the Axon 7 and that was just flat out amazing.

Have you made a purchasing decision yet, OP, or do you have any further questions for us? :)

I was a long time Blackberry user. I believe I had 14 different models thru the years. Very bummed about their demise. I went with a OnePlus 7T. While I miss the keyboard, I enjoy the phone. And, still feel like I'm rooting for the "little" guy.

Former Blackberry Z10, now Samsung A70 user. I miss BBM.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the Note 9 actually checks just about all these boxes. The only thing is that it's nearing the end of support, will probably stay on Android 10 forever and about 1 more year is security updates...maybe a bit more if they surprise us.
I mentioned that phone mostly for the near extinct notification LED and 4000mAh battery.

Anyone tried the Unihertz Titan?
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Happily using Android-based BlackBerry Key2 for the foreseeable future. Although a red version would be great, this black one is doing fine. I can always fall back onto the older Android-based Priv or KeyOne if needed. :)
(Yes, I prefer a PKB. You touch-type people can't do messages under the table during meetings as we PKB people can). :)

I did, it's a pretty decent device for something that came from a tiny tiny kickstarter company such as UniHertz, and especially for the price.
You'd have to get used to a giant 300g brick though.
The square screen is very comfortable to read on.

Check out the Unihertz Titan, it’s like a rugged Android passport.

Yeah imma order the Titan tomorrow....my key2 is still kickin but I don't like downtime if it breaks

Very well said. I had only a few BlackBerry devices over the years but definitely miss the company. I loved my white Bold 9780 and my Q10 was phenomenal. I still think the physical keyboard + touchscreen was a wondrous combination.

And if we really can't have a dedicated Berry anymore, then it would be nice if we could at least have keyboard add on cases for popular smartphone models.
A BB keyboard case for my S10e would be perfect, I'd retire my KEY2 on the spot
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Looooooooongtime BB user here. I do miss the PKB a bit, but I really miss BB's overall intuitive system and ease of use. Anyway, I moved to the Galaxy S10+ last year when my Motion screen cracked. The battery was getting a bit finicky as well, for a daily driver. After years of sub-par cameras on the BBs, that's the main reason I moved to the Galaxy. I still use, and pay for, BlackBerry Hub because I love the way it handles all my email accounts. I also use the SwiftKey keyboard since it seemed to be the closest I could get to the BB VKB. I don't swipe to type, but I pretty much can't live without being able to swipe left to erase the last word or two. And I still use my Motion to play Pokemon Go when I'm at home. It'll be a sad, sad day when that phone finally dies.

The 4a is being announced on Monday, but I don't know if it's available to buy then or if it's just the announcement. I've read that the price might also drop from $399 to $350. But it doesn't have an SD card, and I think the battery is only 3,140 mAh.

Remember that the 3a got remarkably good battery life out of a 3000 mAh battery, presumably due to software optimization, so I'd guess the 4a will be the same if not better.

I decided on the TCL Pro 10. The customizable smart key was really a dealbreaker for me, so I pulled the trigger when I saw Best Buy was offering it for $379 brand new. I picked one for me to replace my Red Key2 and one for my wife to replace her Key2LE. Both will be going to the crackberry marketplace and/or ebay when the 10 Pros arrive.
Battery, headphone jack, expandable storage, amoled screen, quality cameras, metal frame...it just ticks so many boxes! I am also anticipating a rather easy transition since I have technically been using TCL hardware for a few years now with the KEYone and KEY2.
Cheers everyone!

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Thank everyone for the help! I decided to go with the TCL Pro 10, which will be arriving on Monday. Best buy had a sale ($379 brand new) and I could not turn that down. It checks basically every box, including the customizable smartkey (3 actions!!), 4500mah battery, headphone jack, SD card slot, amoled display, etc, etc. I think I will be very happy with this purchase. It even uses the outer edges as a notification LED!
For those that recommended the Titan. I tried it and sold it. Too heavy, terrible camera, and a keyboard that just wasn't up to par with what I am used to.

Man, the day I'd move on from my KEY2... I know I'd wanna keep it anyways even as a secondary device and also for nostalgic reasons.
It's always good to have a backup phone regardless of what you have as a primary.
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I still use my KEY2 LE, and I don't want to give it up. Will use one until it breaks or becomes unusable. I'll switch to either Unihertz Titan or whatever they'll release next (They seem to be updating their old devices like Jelly or Atom with newer versions) or something from TCL. Having double-bluetooth and a customizable key features is amazing

Right, so I'd sell that one because it's Red and then use a small portion of that money towards a cheap KEY2 or LE as a backup/secondary. Those that don't come with their box and original accessories typically go for a lot less on Swappa and eBay.

I am using SwiftKey myself now after testing multiple keyboards since my 10 Pro arrived. I am still ridiculously slow and in accurate now, but SwiftKey has the best autocorrect (I hate that I need that now) and many of the bb vkb features like swipe to delete a word. I even installed the bb vkb, but it's future is uncertain at the least. I will adjust to this in time.
The pro 10 is lovely. It has been nice relearning gesture controls like back in the bb10 days. I'm currently using swipe up to home, swipe up and hold for recents, and swipe up from the bottom left/right for back. This seems to work better than Google's navigation. Back from the side doesn't play nicely in apps with edges.
The screen is awesome on this thing and the build quality in general is top notch. I'm impressed by what TCL is doing on their own now. Looking forward to continued use!

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I just purchased the TCL 10 Pro...
Do you feel you get decent quality images on this ❓ I am tired of Editing everything I Shoot. I use "Photo Editor" by DevMcGyver for Higher Quality. This Stock Editor is not bad, but (most) Hack down Size. (Biggest concern is detail in Close-ups. Not EZ to achieve.)
Maybe I should start using Swiftkey again. G Board does not work well with this, I keep popping out of the Screen/App I'm in. Such a PAIN.
GBoard + App Icon Size = PIAss.
Actually, may need to consider looking into another phone... May need to go spend a bit more. This was @333$
Besides the Pixel & Motorola, anyone have ideas ?
Much appreciated, as Always.

I'm into photography as a hobby, and even my DSLR pics require editing (my last photo shoot took about 5 hours on one photo due to a steep learning curve on sharpening). Editing in photography is almost a way of life if you are looking for more than point and shoot quality. I do love that Photo Editor app, though. It's a hidden gem in the sea of filter based apps that think editing means putting animal ears and rainbows on everything.
That said, TCL isn't a well known brand for phones. I'm certain you'll find better options out there, but you will have to pay a higher price for them. For point and shoot, I would consider Samsung as well. If you want manual controls, look at LG's V-series line. Even their V60 is getting up to par with Samsung and Pixel for auto modes, which use to be their weakness.

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I used to have a Nokia 7.1.
Not a great camera. It was serviceable. Worked great with gboard. It's on the android one program. Look at its successor.

Re: Need help finding a new phone!
I used to photograph for the local papers and did weddings, sports, etc. Lightroom and presets became a way of life.
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Haa. Rainbows + Animal Ears. Never crosses my mind. Cool you like Photo Editor too. Yeas, a Hidden Gem at very Least.
I need images worthy of Gallery Submission.
Asking a lot, I Know.
You are both right, maybe Editing IS A WAY OF LIFE. But Oh, I get SO TIRED (esp when I have a headache).
Asking for just Focused Images, is that too much❓
I will look at the Nokia Series & Samsung, tho I may want A lot for my $.(TCL 10 Pro seemed to have a lot of bang for the buck.
What do u all think of the One Plus Series as a better point & shoot ?
Looks like no one has them available tho.
Thank u for your input !

I'm petite build, but long fingers.
Overall this phone is Extremely Responsive.

The 20fe is bigger then my note 2 from back in the day lol.
It has the 800 series processor, 120ghz refresh rate, 6gb ram. Android 11 just started rolling out. Updates won't be the fastest but I love the device. I'm not even using a launcher. I'm using it with their one ui interface which is still on 2.5. Battery life fantastic. Microsd slot, wifi 6, and more.

Only have until 31st to return this (^O^).

No, but mostly because the forum heavily compresses and reduces the resolution of the photo.

Same as if you sent it via mms. Otherwise this site would need more space to host things.

Apart from the file compression on the forums mentioned above, it does look a bit blurry. How close to the flower were you holding the phone? Were you using the macro lens? Remember that the macro lens is only 5 MP, not 64 MP.
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Actually not too close... auto, iso 438, file was 3.06mb
-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
Originally Posted by

Given that file size, I'm thinking that wasn't a 64MP photo. 64MP photos on my phone are over 10MB (and they look like junk too, due to the tiny individual pixel size and extra image noise). My phone will also default to the pixel binned 16MP size, which look much better. Even if I set it to 64MP, if I leave the app and come back to it, it resets. In manual mode, 64MP isn't even an option.
I'm guessing your phone did the same, switching to 16MP. Mine are still larger than that, so I'm thinking yours also has a lower bit depth or extra compression applied. Or perhaps an even lower resolution was set.
-

True. It would be helpful to know the exposure time. That may tell us if it's focus or motion blur (I.e. Camera shake).

For a low MP camera, it just may be better with detail (?)
So now it says my SD card on the Huawei (replaced phone) is bad & needs replaced.

-
Re: Need help finding a new phone!
My guess is there was a focusing and subject distance issue. A 1/33" exposure should be fast enough to not be affected by camera shake unless it was just very wobbly. It also looks like you were less than a foot away from the flower.
If the file info screenshot from the TCL is correct (you initially said it had a different ISO, so are you sure you uploaded the correct one?), the resolution is a bit under 10MP, but the focal length matches the main 64MP camera. So I'm guessing you were using the main camera, but saving in a lower resolution.
That's a big deal, because the aperture of the 64MP camera on the TCL is wider than that of the Huawei. f/1.8 to f/2.2 may not sound like much, but the differences are exaggerated as apertures get wider (it's an inverse ratio, so a smaller number is a wider aperture). One of which being the depth of field. When you focus on a spot, DoF is how far in front and behind that spot that is also in focus. While a wider aperture helps with low light, the trade-off is a narrower DoF. That's simply lens physics and not something that can be "fixed." Sensor size and subject distance also plays a role in DoF.
Taking a closer look, parts of the flower in the TCL photo are in focus, but other parts are not. It also looks like you were fairly close, a foot away at most. I tried to calculate that info, and it shows a DoF of 2.76". In other words, at 1 foot distance from the subject, just over an 1" in front and behind the focal point will be in focus. For something like that flower, the blurring makes sense now. It was harder to get an accurate number for the Huawei, but it looks like at a foot, the DoF is around 4.5", due mostly to the narrower aperture.
So all that said, back up and try again with the TCL and see if it's any better. Moving further back will increase the DoF so you can get more in focus. It doesn't have to be much, either. Moving from 1 foot to 1'3" changes the TCL DoF from 2.76" to 4.37". At 1'6", DoF is 6.38". The downside is this means your composure/perspective changes some, and you'll have to crop the photo to only include the flower. Such is photography, everything is a trade-off.

I can either be clear, or concise, but rarely both. Lol.

Mooncatt, TonyBoDonuts, & B Diddy,
Well, there's definitely Compression happening.
Spent stupid amount of time "chatting" with the ONLY Amazon Rep I've ever had that wanted to
"Solve my Problem". Was not fun.
Tired of trying to sort this out. I realize now, 333$ gets u very little these days. What a shame.
Can someone say, (read the post to)
'CARRY TWO PHONES' ❓
I don't want to keep, but today was the last day to print a label to Return. It seems the Galaxy we were looking at has gone up in price.
Might as well buy an Overpriced Device at that point... So, my Persistence for once has Faltered.
Sad Face.
I will work on what you mentioned above. Makes sense.
