Transistors were once so expensive that they were considered a lab toy. Now there are a few million of them in your phone. Some day nanotube super capacitors will sell for 15 2015 dollars. (The first transistor I used that was capable of driving anything louder than an earphone, a 2N68, sold for $6.50[(in 1955, when $30/week could support a family]. Today, if you can even find transistors left in a Radio Shack store, you can buy transistors capable of more power for about $2 for a bag of 15. And that's a Radio Shack ripoff.)
