Transistors were once so expensive that they were considered a lab toy. Now there are a few million of them in your phone. Some day nanotube super capacitors will sell for 15 2015 dollars. (The first transistor I used that was capable of driving anything louder than an earphone, a 2N68, sold for $6.50[(in 1955, when $30/week could support a family]. Today, if you can even find transistors left in a Radio Shack store, you can buy transistors capable of more power for about $2 for a bag of 15. And that's a Radio Shack ripoff.)

Yes, time does change things now doesn't it. I remember my first PC was a Heathkit H8 (that I had to build myself) and 16k of RAM was a lot. Started with tape cassette tape drives and when I finally upgraded to 5-1/4 floppy disk that disk drive cost $400.00 and I had to buy a box of TEN 90k single sided disk to go with it. I remember telling the guy on the phone, I do not need 10, I only need 1. Yes time does change, doesn't it?
