It doesn't look like the update replaces init.rc so we can modify it and have it still run after the update. Can we just have init.rc restore the suid bit on su and superuser.apk on boot?
Hmm. This won't work either, nor will dropping a SUID root version of SU at the root directory since the whole root directory is actually a ramdisk image which is rebuilt on each reboot. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that this is being replaced during the update or I'd just rebuild it with modified files.

    Back to the drawing board.

i'm a noob to this whole android world... (coming from blackberry. i still miss my physical keyboard!)
and my phone was already updated when i got it.... :*(
i guess... i can roll it back to ed1... but i'm scurred! cuz i'm not too tech savvy... and the phone's so pretty. i don't want to brick(?) it.
it'd be awesome... if there's a simpler way to do this... there would be... right? cuz it makes me so angry when i scroll all the way down my applications (i put all those useless appls on the last page - the best i could do with my knowledge. lol.) i see blockbuster and golf. wth. i've come to terms with accepting stupid verizon apps on my verizon phones after years... but seriously? let's golf?
anyway. thnx for the info... but i hope there will be an easier way to root the phone... cuz i'm not a genius, but i can read and follow instructions :]

I think it should be between 5 and 10 minutes for the full process to complete.

So i'm still on the fence about downgrading/rooting with ED2-ED1. I see some post that indicate you can recover from the downgrade/root and it will cause no issues in the future with updates, but then i see some post that say once it's done there's no recovery and you'll be stuck? Thanks again for all the knowledge and advice. You guys are awesome!

Root for ED2 works with a custom kernel, and more stuff should be out soon then as well, like custom ROMs that are pre-rooted.

With LPP and fat trimmed, the Charge is pretty fast already. OCing will just kill your battery faster, make the device run hotter, and likely shorten its lifespan.

[WARN]Gingersnap (along with all other Android modifications) is experimental software and while I have made this as safe as possible, differences in operating environments and natural disasters can cause your device to become unusable. Please make sure you understand this important fact before downloading.

Disclaimer: Neither myself, Android Central or any other member of Android Central are responsible for any disasters that occur as a result of any hack or modification you perform on your device. Your use of this application is at your own risk![/WARN]

With that out of the way, I'd like to introduce you to the Gingersnap Root Utility. Gingersnap is a one-click root utility, much like SuperOneClick or Universal Androot.

The nitty gritty: Gingersnap uses a modified version of the famous GingerBreak exploit to automatically root your Android-powered device and installs the necessary files to maintain a permanent root status.

    Pre-use Requirements:
    1) You need the .NET 4 Framework. Not the Client Profile, the full .NET 4 Framework.
    2) For some reason you need the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable installed. Don't ask me why.
    3) You need proper drivers for the your phone. Your video card doesn't work without drivers and neither will your phone.
    4) Before running this Utility please make sure your phone is in debugging mode

    Instructions:
    • Download and unzip Gingersnap-V1.2.zip to anyplace on your computer
    • Connect your phone to computer in debugging mode
    • Open Gingersnap-V1.2 folder
    • Double click Gingersnap applications icon
    • press GO , sit back and relax

Think you're ready? The file is attached to this post.

there is a custom ED2 rom and you dont need to be rooted for it , it is prerooted. so go head and update then flash the rom, its in the roms and hacks section.

ok off to sleep, have a good day

I'm having a hard time with the gingersnap oneclick method. I followed the prerequisite steps and am on ED1.
Looks like i'm stuck on "Stealing the ginger's soul" running for 10+ minutes. desktop utility shows the CPU still working hard for what that's worth. Am i missing something? or should I just try the ADB method

    Update:
Tried method 2 and everything seemed to go well up to the execution of the update. I've gotten this message twice:
    C:\DSChargeRoot>adb shell
    $ /data/local/GingerBreak
    /data/local/GingerBreak

Update3: Confirmed that I am indeed in ED2 /facepalm. lesson learned, going to the ODIN method.
