New to this smart phone stuff, trying to understand. I understand that internet usage, downloading pics, that sort of thing uses our allotted data (4G I think) as does making calls, texting, right? How about playing songs I have on my phone. When I open up an the app "play music" it will ask if I want to connect to a WiFi connection. I'm just trying to figure out what is using our data allotment and how to curtail usage.

Out of what you listed calling and sms will NOT use up data, MMS might, but it's so minimal you may not notice it.

Play music doesn't use data unless you're streaming music you have stored on the [google] cloud, otherwise you're able to select 'music on device', as well as turn on 'stream over wifi only' in the application settings. Hope this helps!
