Red "?" showing up on my battery indicator

Any ideas on why I would have a red "?" showing up on my battery indicator at the top? Phone was on the charger all night, and when I got up this morning there is a red "?" on the battery indicator and it apparently did not charge. Any thoughts?

I believe that shows up if you have less than 5% battery remaining... I recall seeing that exact icon on my Nexus 7 when the battery was about to die.

It means that the phone is not recognizing the battery. Either the battery voltage has dropped below a readable limit, or it is not an OEM battery.
