Could you send me the link to Chris41g for the kernel-gb.3a.tar.md5 file? thanks!

The top of this thread (information... files to download) has a link to it. It isn't on Chirs41g's page... it is in the XDA developers forum.

I'd repost the link... but apparently I'm link-challenged... grrr....

The Epic vibrates a crash message 1+3 beeps after following all instructions. All went well until the final restart.
I tried both the kernell from the link you provide (3a) and the original one kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 from elsewhere. Neither works.
Are there alternative sets of files?
My only need is to fix a lag in keyboard, I can cope with everything else.
    Thanks
    Max

    Sprint Samsung Epic 4G.
I am still surprized how much time I spent on fixing Epic 4G!
It seemed like a decent phone, but had several serious problems:
    1. Short battery life = upgraded to thick 2x battery with a thick cover.
    2. Spring has very poor coverage = after a year of suffering discovered, that roaming and data roaming are free and now always use roaming option no matter what. That solved signal problem but there is no 4G anymore.
    3. The physical keyboard skipps keys especially if a key is repeated twice. I was really disappointed about that for 1.5 years.
Gingerbread update, as appears now doesn't solve this problem.
    So what I did:
(originally I rooted my Froyo (old android os) and installed a keyboard fix. Rooting is a process that allows modifying the Android system deep inside. The original fix didn't fix the problem. ) Then I discovered that my phone doesn't install the gingerbread update that was feeded by Sprint. After a couple of months, I decided to force it and succeded.
(This set of instructions was great and educational, but didn't work for me - http://forums.androidcentral.com/epi...tructions.html
the phone would beep (1+3) vibrations signaling about the system crash after restart.)

Here are the steps that worked:
    1. Download "App list backup" from market.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result
Backup the list of apps to sd card. The program then helps installing the apps from the market one by one. Since there is so many of them it remembers which ones were installed. Not more than that.(Titanium backup is great except it requires rooting which I am not sure I want anymore since rooting prevents automatic upgrades).
    2. Followed this instruction to Flash/Restore to Froyo EC05 (Procedure #1)
    http://forums.androidcentral.com/epi...ked-phone.html
    3. Manually upgraded Froyo to Gingerbread.
    http://forums.androidcentral.com/spr...ad-thread.html
    4. Installed a custom kernel with a keyboard fix.
Epic GB kernel sources! (11/22/11 EI22 keyfix kernel) - xda-developers

A quick test shows that the keyboard lag has been fixed. Otherwise it is an official Gingerbread eligible for further automatic updates.

Here are the files I used.

I followed QBking77's instructions to put kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 on my phone twice and soft bricked my phone twice. You save it unzipped right then use Odin? both times I got a fail in the progress window, then "brick". restore was easy, but I am frustrated! any ideas?

Update: Ok yanked the battery and made sure the sd card was dismounted and it worked. wish I had known this a week ago, thank you androidcentral.com!

After searching dozens of sites and bricking my phone once (thanks to "SWUpgrade for SPH-D700" for easy recovery from that), this post got me from a troubled rooted 2.2.1 to a fully recovered 2.3.5! Easy, clear instructions.

Now, I want a good ROM for rooted gingerbread on the original Epic 4G. Loved Syndicate Frozen before. Any recommendations?

Most seem to like Clean GB.

Glad our instructions got you rooted without issue.

Paul, you think you might be able to post a How to Root Stock EL30 (with all the fixes that EL30 didn't address, ie. can we still use the custom kernel for keeping CWM and keyboard lag fix). I think the GPS fix may still be required too but that could be installed after everything else is complete. also, what is the latest CWM that can be used with stock? I have 3.1.1.

rando, I'm actually in the process of updating the rooting OP instructions. Fresh new look to my layout and updated to support CWM 5.0.2.7. I should have it done and up I hope by tomorrow (Monday).

As far as EL30 goes, I would imagine it is going to be the same route as we already have for EI22 just a kernel update if anything. I will check into this.

Thanks Paul, I'll be waiting for your EL30 rooting instructions before updating.

The one little snag I ran into was having to install CWM to get SU, delete the install recovery script, then reinstall CWM again.

The one little snag I ran into was having to install CWM to get SU, delete the install recovery script, then reinstall CWM again.
So if I understand things correctly you had to do the following..

    1. Flash CWM with Odin
    2. Flash SU in CWM before booting.
    3. Go in and deltete the install recovery script.
    4. Shut down and flash the CWM again with Odin to get it to stick?

Sorry, just trying to get the steps down so I can properly write the rooting guide to support this until they have an updated kernel for EL30.

Didn't we have to flash the custom kernel in order for cwm to stick? Why can't we do it again this time? It sounds more complicating to delete the above mentioned file.
