I plan to order the phone once they are made available but I am kinda concerned Verizon will give me the run around activating it on their network. Is there a removable sim card on the phone as swapping cards seems to work in getting phones activated on Verizon if they don't have it listed in their system.

It will have a removable sim. As long as you have service with verizon just stick your sim in and you will be good to go

Given recent history (non Verizon specific models), I would guess Volte would eventually work but not WiFi calling.

Wifi calling will not be supported without Verizon firmware and that ain't happening.

That's not entirely Verizon limiting it, that's really HTC causing the issue, as they didn't bother to provide CDMA channels. Essential has provided all of the channels Verizon runs, according to the specs we've seen.

I wasn't referring to 3G. I was referring to bands 2 and 4 LTE.

WiFi Calling is baked into Android. It's no longer a per-carrier feature like the old days. Even the KEYone supports it out of the box and most carriers couldn't care less about BlackBerry these days. My KEYone worked with WFC no problem.

So does Verizon require approval for the phone to operate on their CDMA network? I've been with them for years and they are terribly slow with getting things tested.

Not since they got smart and adopted a proper BYOD program. As long as the phone has VZW's required LTE and CDMA bands, there's no reason why they should deny compatibility.

Yeah I know they are required by law to allow that. I've just had problems in the past getting my phone activated when it wasn't listed in there system.

Again, the fact that no CDMA was provided by HTC probably effected Verizon's handling of the phone. If you don't play by their rules who knows what you'll get.

Everything we've seen so far leads me to believe that Essential will be fully compatible, therefore I'd suspect that Verizon will be more likely to accept it. Then again, we won't know anything until the phone actually arrives and this is just speculation.

I worked for Verizon for 4 years, every phone they sold has a removable SIM, I've never heard of a phone without one.

I wrote it was my mistake on that. Also the Essential is not being sold by Verizon as far as I know so you'll be at the mercy of whoever to activate it and have it be listed correctly when you go to My Phone details on Verizon Wireless website. I had a Day 1 unlocked Pixel the local store wouldn't activate as I needed a new SIM and the phone allegedly wasn't in there system yet.

The U11 has a CDMA radio. It's baked into the hardware. Verizon chose not to activate it.
