On the Essential website under specifications it states water-error rejection....why? If it is not water proof why would you use it in the water...why call that feature out? It was not called out before.

It sounds like they are talking about the screen. A lot of screens become unusable when your fingers are wet.

Hopefully they're still working on getting it rated. I emailed them last week and received this in response:

Thanks for writing in. Questions about the water and dust resistance qualities of the Essential Phone are being asked by lots of people. It's a completely fair question and we hear you. Right now I don't have an official response to give you, but I encourage you to stay tuned to Essential.com and our social channels for updates and announcements.
Judging by the ambiguous response, it's possible they're still testing and will add a rating to it later or it won't get rated at all.

News broke yesterday that Sony lost a huge settlement over their IP ratings not being accurate. Sony had to fork out up to 50% of MSRP per device as a result. It's possible that Essential designed the PH-1 for IP-57 at a minimum but doesn't want to risk publishing the spec to mitigate any warranty or lawsuit issues later.

Search online for "sony IP rating settlement" for more info. There are a few articles on the issue.
