Saw this tweet from essential replying to someone when he said if he should return the phone or are they planning to improve the camera. Interesting how they are planning to add the portrait mode given that their second camera is a monochrome sensor.

Hi Charles, we'll add new features (Portrait Mode) + improve camera performance (processing speed, time b/t shots) on an ongoing basis. 1/2

Improvements will be added to the existing camera features that include dual sensor image fusion for rich and detailed images, and more. 2/2

That's me 😀

Thanks for the post,

The pictures are too small to really tell, but I honestly have to say after all the talk about the amazing quality of the note 8 that I had been hearing I am let down by the Note 8 pictures posted here!

I am no Note 8 fan, but compared to the well documented faulty camera processing of the Essential, with an inferior sensor and all, these pictures are not that much better! other than some different exposure levels and better dynamic range in some of the pictures I am honestly let down by a damn near 1000$ phone!

This was taken with the app "Open Camera" on the play store. I am enjoying this camera so far but definitely needs a lot of improvement in the stock app. The mono however is amazing.

While in a photo ops for an upcoming wedding, I saw this spot and had an idea of using a monochrome instead of color. This is unedited using the updated camera app of PH-1. IMHO, the mono style is one of the best. Hope you like it.

Have any of you tried using the new Google camera app for Snapdragon 820/835 devices? You have to sideload it, but I hear it makes this camera incredible.

I have both. Honestly, the big difference you see is the warmth and color tones in the HDR processing. To me, I believe the quality is the same after the recent Essential Camera upgrade.

Snapped this from my dash mount while I was at a stop light. I've been trying out the camera in various lighting conditions to decide if I'm keeping this or not. I'm pretty happy with this picture.

Noticing some folks taking full screen (landscape) pictures. How? My Essential with the stock Essential Camera app only takes square. Am I missing a very simple functionality to find?
Go into the camera, Then there should be a side menu. You need to change the resolution of the photo. I believe by default it's on 8mp.
