looks like you can't get this OTA...you will need to flash via ADB.

It's a developer preview which isn't meant for daily use.

I've got it set up now. Apparently they had issues with the first build they posted, where things like LTE and WiFi weren't working. Apparently those are fixed now, as on the version I just installed everything (so far) seems to work. So far everything seems to be quick with no stutters but we'll see how it runs as I test out various apps.

Just a warning that this is a very early build of Android P and, if you decide to install it, you should expect to have issues -- I wouldn't download it yet on your primary phone.

I definitely plan to install it on my daily driver - in the coming weeks. I'm so eager to try it, but I want to wait a tad bit longer.

I have it on mine....so far it's a good experience. Been using it as my daily driver without issues. Gestures are pretty slick (I wish you can swipe left from the home button instead of the disappearing back button, but otherwise pretty great.)

When Essential1 was $399 thought it would be handy to play with P if possible. Looks interesting.

OTA is the one I used. It doesn't wipe your data during install when coming up from Oreo. I read somewhere that it is also less glitchy.

I don't think I can agree with that, the two updates should be the same other than the method for installing them. Having said that, they appear to have gone through a few different "versions" of the update on the first day it was available -- there were many issues when it was first posted, including LTE and WiFi not working at all. In the afternoon, the updates were pulled for a while, and then replaced with new "versions" -- or perhaps just new packages that included modules that were missing from the initial builds.

I did the fastboot and I'd be surprised if it wasn't the "better" install method -- just because of the issues that sometimes get created when you install over a previous version of the OS, and this is doubly true in early beta builds. Having said that, if you don't want your data wiped, the OTA has an advantage -- but it will be at the expense of possibly having issues from something "carried over" from Oreo.

I had to turn off the gesture because they only really seem to work with the stock launcher and i don't see much advantage of using them at this point.

this has been a really stable and bug free experience so far.

Interesting, I haven't tried using a different launcher yet. Though it does make sense, with the various changes 3rd party launchers allow to the UI, that you would need upgraded launchers to be able to work with gestures. Personally, I'm really liking the new UI, so I guess I won't think of changing to a different launcher, until I know it is upgraded to work with the new gestures.

You might try contacting the developer, see if they have an idea when they might release an Android P compatible version -- though it is likely they won't release the Android P version for a few months, until P is released. You might even let them know that you are running Android P and would be willing to beta test P-compatible versions.

I flashed the OTA version and I think P will be real cool when it's fully baked. LTE isn't working as far as receiving calls. I went with selecting 3G which allows for calls to come in. Here's what's disturbing: I can't sideload 8.1 to go backwards as the Essential site suggests if you want to reinstall. I get an error message saying installation aborted and that the build timestamp indicates that it's an older version. Well, no ****. If anyone has ideas what that's about or how to fix it, let me know. otherwise, I'm going to keep it as is until the next preview comes out. I have an iPhone X to fall back on if needed.

    hi guys;
so i flashed the fastboot version, and then restored from my latest backup (almost zero loss of data)
I had to go here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/es...ivers-adb.html in order to solve a driver issue I encountered.
no NEW issues at all so far (had a bunch of issues with 7&8).
I am not sure I dig the new P home button. seems like a iphone X ripoff that I am not sure worth ripping off.
still its great the essential was listed in the P dev builds...

I'm noticing when looking at my list of paired Bluetooth devices I have to click settings for the device I want to connect to rather than being able to just click the name. Also the same for disconnecting. Not a big deal but def a bug

Swipe up to get the apps running in the background, then tap the icon for the app located at the top of that apps "window". When you press the icon, it will open up a menu that shows you "App Info" and, if the apps allows it, "Split Screen." The app will then appear at the very top of the screen, basically only showing the top bar, along with the split screen divider that you can use to resize the app. Then you just need to start another app.

The big issue I'm seeing is that most apps, other than the Google apps, don't seem to allow split screen from the running apps menu.

Saw that earlier when I went to their Twitter feed to see if there were any further updates about the fate of the company. I really hope that they are able to update this phone for a couple of more years. I noted before that they did not need to rush out for the PH-2. just make the PH-1 better and grow the user base, then release the next gen in 2019. Hope they can still do this.
