Not sure when this will go live, but they claim they'll accept any working phone, so I think I'll trade in my lousy old Honor 5X. I'd still use my Pixel 3 XL as my daily driver (with plans to upgrade to the 6 later this year), but it'd be nice to have this A32 5G as a backup phone -- and I'd finally have a Samsung phone to futz around with when people have very specific Samsung questions on the forum!

I saw April 18th as the starting date of the Great Trade Up. I have some old Tracfones lying around that I can use lol.

Probably get this for my son.

For sure it's a great deal and you don't have to add a line to get it. The caveat is that you pay for the phone through 2 years of billing credits so if you leave TMo, you'll need to fork over the balance due. Good deal for those that have a crappy old phone and want a good backup, or to upgrade your daily driver and get to keep it as your backup.

True, but the phone retails for only $282, so it wouldn't be a crippling balloon payment!

I looked at some more of the fine print, and it looks like part of the deal is that I'd have to upgrade my plan to a 5G plan -- right now, I'm only on Magenta Plus, which is 4G only. I have no need for 5G yet, so I guess I'll hold off. Maybe when I presumably upgrade to the Pixel 6, I'll reconsider this offer, if it's still available.

I'm confused. I thought they were going to "upgrade" existing T-mobile customers to the 5g plan automatically at no extra cost??

Hmm, you're right, I remember hearing that as well. Ok, I'll delve a little deeper ...

EDIT: It does say that in the press release: https://www.t-mobile.com/news/un-car...-move-5gforall. When it supposedly goes live on 4/18, I'll check in with T-Mobile to see if my account has been upgraded.

I think before this announcement, Magenta Max was the 5G plan while all others were 4G: https://www.pcmag.com/news/t-mobile-...an-magenta-max. Or did Magenta Plus always have 5G? I can't remember. It was never relevant to me before, since I didn't have a 5G device.

I'm pretty sure it was always a 5G plan. The difference between the 2 is the allotted data caps. One is unlimited which is the MAX and the Magenta caps out at 100gb or something like that

I initiated the trade-in today, but will have to wait about a week for the A32 5G to be shipped to me. Will be interesting to see how that phone is. I read a few more specs -- it only has a 720p screen, but hey, free is free!

As I joked with mustang7757 about, I'll finally have a Samsung phone I can futz around with, so hopefully I'll be able to answer Samsung-specific questions a little better instead of turning on the Batsignal (Mustangsignal?) for his help.

I got the A32 5G -- pretty nice phone, especially considering the price! Build is solid -- although the back is plastic, it feels more like glass. Performance seems good so far -- tested using Williams Pinball, which was smooth and flawless (SoC is a MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G, which is new to me; 4 GB RAM, although CPU Identifier Pro reports 3.5 GB for some reason). Screen is only 720P, but it does have 90 Hz refresh. Bright with nice colors, but viewing angles aren't great. Only one speaker, which doesn't seem to get too loud at max volume. I haven't formally tested battery life, but it seems stellar. I don't plan to test it for calling on the network. I also haven't tested the camera extensively, but I did notice it doesn't seem to handle exposure very well.

I uninstalled a few preinstalled apps (like LinkedIn and Microsoft Office), but even then, about 20 GB out of 64 GB was used by the system and other bloatware. During setup, when I was doing a system update, it said it was optimizing 407 apps. In comparison, my Pixel 3 XL after installing all of my current apps lists 223. Oh, Samsung.

    Nice.

Did you have to activate a new line or no?

Nope. Just agreed to send in my old Nexus 5X (which I got from Newegg a few years ago for $45 to act as a backup). They told me any working phone is valid for trade-in, including flip phones!

Got one by trading in a $10 tracfone. Got the $15 prepaid plan for it. Dirt cheap extra line and phone.

Nice! It's a pretty decent phone, considering the price.

I also took advantage of their iPhone trade-in offer this past weekend -- traded in my daughter's iPhone 8 for a 12, for just $50 more (since I upgraded from 64 GB to 128 GB). But the added protection plan (the only way to get AppleCare) was an additional $18/mo.
