No need to lie about losing a phone.... Threatening to leave Verizon don't always work... they have too many customers to care... (at least not right now) They talk with hundreds of customers each day and they have heard all the BS excuses people come up with.
However, being upfront about wanting to upgrade and a clean billing history will usually get a nice VZW supervisor to do early upgrades. (if not, just keep calling back until you talk to a nice one)
