I received my invite to Project Fi today and was about to jump onto the bandwagon but after some research, it looks like I won't be able to duplicate my current setup. I give out my carrier (AT&T) number to family/friends and my GV number for work/spam. I am able to have both numbers all routed through my phone's dialer and hangouts seamlessly. My plan was to transfer my GV number to another Google account and port my carrier number to Fi. However, I just found out that I will not be able to forward calls from my GV number to Fi or the other way around either.

Bottom line, I won't be able to access both numbers on my phone once I join Fi. Unless I'm missing something that would enable this...?

You should be able to create a new Voice number activate Fi on your old one, then install Vioce and run with the voice number you choose.

Does GV even work on Fi? Ever since I switched to Hangouts I haven't had a need to use it. I think, if I remember correctly that Hangouts used my GV number for everything. Or at least that's how I remember it being setup.

Your situation sounds somewhat similar to mine.

Ultimately, I had to pass on Fi because I couldn't use the GV app and because Fi doesn't have conditional call forwarding.

I want to port the cell number from T-Mobile to the Google account to be used for Fi. That account does not have, and never has had, a GV number. I want to keep using a GV number that's on a separate account used for business, which is how it's been for years.

IOW needed to know if Fi will function as a straight-up replacement for T-Mobile postpaid service. Which means Fi must have conditional call forwarding. And since the GV number to be used is on a separate Google account, Fi must work with the GV app and VoiceChoice 2.0 the same way T-Mobile does. So, for Fi work as smoothly and easily as T-Mobile does now, Fi absolutely must be able to use the GV app.

It works like this: The GV app is set to make all calls through GV by default. But VoiceChoice 2.0 dials out, automatically choosing to use either the cell number or GV, depending on the contact group the contact being called is in. Business contacts see the GV business number, friends and family see the cell number. All calls to the GV number are forwarded to the cell number. Unanswered calls to the cell number are forwarded by conditional call forwarding back to GV so GV can handle all voicemail.

This works perfectly. Routing is automatic. You don't have to do anything special or remember anything, just uses the phone normally and GV and VoiceChoice 2.0 deals with which phone number is used for outgoing calls. Voicemail is centralized in one place and it even sends text transcriptions of voicemail. But if Fi can't use the GV app it loses all that super-handy functionality. And you need conditional call forwarding.

You do not have to use GV for the GV number on the separate account. When you set up Hangouts, make sure both accounts are logged in. The GV number will use hangouts via voip. Calls can be received and made this way. The Fi number utilizes the phone dialer for in bound and out bound calls. To use the GV number, make sure that account is the account at the front of hangouts and use the hang outs dialer. The dialer will show that you are using your GV number.

Port your GV number to another Google account you own. I did this. Ported my previous carrier number to Fi and moved my GV number to a new Google account I created. Sign into Hangouts with both accounts and you're good to go.

I am about to get Fi but have a question. Assume the following: I have VZW# (VZW), Google Voice#1 (GV1) and Google Voice#2 (GV2). I am porting GV2 to be my Fi#. I have GV1 forwarded to my VZW and it works fine. Question: If I forward my VZW number to my Fi number, will all three numbers ring on my Fi Nexus 6?

I am not sure you can continue to forward the gv1 to the vzw when forwarding the vzw to the new fi. Forward the vzw to the fi and set the gv1 as a second account on hangouts. All will ring on the phone, but you will only be able to dial out using the fi and gv1 numbers. I have not tried this at this time. I have been able to make and receive calls on all 3 numbers on a different phone with the vzw sim. This defeats the reason for getting and using fi but it can be done.

This has been the tricky part for me also. I just received my invite, but I neither wish to use my GV# for Fi nor release my GV#. I opted to use Fi on a different Google account and was put back in the queue for an invite.

I use GV to sync calls/txt across multiple carriers. Effectively, I have one # regardless of which phone or carrier I'm using. No porting needed. It's worked well for me over the years.
