can you sell or trade a sprint financed phone?

I have a guy who has a 6plus that I want to trade my note 4 for, this phone is financed, is he allowed to trade or does the phone have to be paid off first? I have a feeling the phone has to be paid off first lol.

Technically you could use it but if he ever stopped paying for it you would have a phone that no longer works.
