My wife and I are on a Verizon plan and have the Share Everything Plan (or whatever its called) and share 10gigs of data. They say if you change anything on your plan, it boots you out of contract and you lose your discounted upgrade. If I change my plan, will this drop me out of contract completely? We signed a two year contract only six months ago. Any clarification would be appreciated.

What exactly do you want to change? You can add and remove features from your plan and that doesn't mess anything up. For example in April my wife went to Italy and I add an international calling package for one month then took it off...no problems.

We wanted to upgrade to the 12 gig package which is the new "XL" package. Seems like that would boot me out though. If that happens, what happens to the two year contract?

You would remain on contract
You would pay $80 xl + 2x$20 line access +2x$20 contract offset fee.

The contract offset fee would disappear once you fulfilled your contract.
