For an example, let us assume you have a phone number 454 111 1111 (a) with ATT.
You alse have a Google Voice number prior to Project Fi 454 222 2222 (b)

With Project Fi, you selected the GV number (b) to become primary so you now have calls ringing on (b) but a copy of the message goes to your previous phone (a).

If you now call ATT and cancel phone (a), there is no longer a "backup" of the messages, routed to email or SMS. How do you handle that, perhaps create a new GV number or can you simply stop sending to phone (a) and still be able to read the transcribed voice message in your email or hangouts ?

Use hangouts with your Fi phone and your messages will show up on any device that you have it loaded on.

Right now I am using my AT&T LG V10 with hangouts as an app and if I get a text on my Project Fi number I can see it on both devices. When I reply, it automatically shows its coming from the Fi number no matter what device I am on.

I second this. I use fi for my personal phone and I have texts and calls show up on my work phone with hangouts.

The only drawback to this that I've found is that Hangouts doesn't allow auto-responses while driving. I use Car Home Ultra and it will not auto-reply to SMS messages that I receive the way I want it to. It will only reply using a true SMS app like Messaging. I'm still using Hangouts though for SMS since I like getting my messages on my multiple tablets and my desktop. The car mode issue is very disappointing though.

I will do anything to avoid Hangouts! The Fi Phone app and Messenger have great features and continue to get better!

The biggest drawback that I have encountered is not having the multiple device ring capability. (can't forward calls between Google-numbers). I still have my fingers crossed... I quit using (slowly) my eight-year-old Google Voice number and took a new number with Project Fi. Someday they may allow Google-number to Google-number forwarding.

Prior to Fi, I never had a physical device with my GV number... I had it forwarded to my cell, home & office phones (the phone numbers of which I had never given to anybody). Using GV allows me to almost completely eliminate unwanted calls.
