Welcome to Android Central! You need to make sure the flash drive is connected via OTG adapter. Samsung often includes one in the original packaging of the device, and some flash drives integrate OTG into plug. Otherwise, you'd have to buy one, but they're quite inexpensive.

Yes, I've done it with a dual-headed thumb drive designed for smartphones, dates back to my Note 5, possibly even my S4. I need a MicroUSB to USB-C to do it with my Note 9, though, which I have several of. In fact, I snagged my drive and plugged it into my J2 Core to demo it for you. As you can see, the in the notification, it recognizes the drive with no issues. I probably should have cleaned it a bit, but it works.

The second image is files currently saved to the drive. It's where I also have 3 full backups of my phones in case data is ever lost or compromised. Also, as a test, I was able to play music directly from the drive while it was plugged in.

You can get adapters from Amazon. Also you can get an otg flash drive from Amazon as well. I use both a flash drive and an external hard drive with my S10+. You can get a flash drive with USB c on one end which means you don't need an adapter. If your tablet has a micro USB connector then buy one with that on one end instead of the USB c. This is amazon UK.

You don't need any software. Just use the my files app. Make sure you have the USB drive set to files transfer when it pops up

The image I shared in my post above has no extra software installed. I do have the SanDisk Memory Zone app installed on my Note 9 to manage updates and backups. Just plug it in and it recognizes the drive and prompts you to transfer media. The Note has many times more ROM space than the J2 does, so that's why I don't have the Memory Zone app installed on it. But Memory Zone links to your online Cloud spaces, like Drive, or Dropbox, as well.
