After getting into settings, wi-fi it says to Tap Advanced > Wi-Fi frequency band. Select the desired radio band. None of the suggestions apply to this phone. After following the initial steps. there is no 'frequency band to tap' or way to change bands. I already went into the router on my desktop and it confirms connection to 5.0 but no way to change it. I am trying to connect to smart home devices which require 2.4. Open to suggestions. thanks

Make sure in your router settings it's allows to display both 5ghz and 2.4ghz , then should see a selection under WiFi network available , it's not so much that setting be in your phone.

Welcome to Android Central! So just to be clear -- you want the smart home devices to connect to your home wi-fi system over 2.4 GHz, and you can't get the router to broadcast in 2.4 GHz? Or are you trying to connect your phone to the smart home device directly via wi-fi? Usually, smart home devices need to connect to your home wi-fi system.

You can't set the phone to use one band or the other. You can't turn off the 5 GHz band or 2.4 GHz band independently. That's just the way it is.

On the other hand, all devices, regardless of which band they are connected to as long as it's the same router, should see each other.

If you want devices connected to specific bands on the router, you need to give each band a distinct SSID. For example, on my router, I have the SSID I've used for years on the 2.4 band. But, I added a "-5" to the name for the 5 band. If both bands use the same SSID, then devices will connect to whichever is the stronger connection that it sees. It will not make a distinction.

But, again, if all devices are on the same router, it shouldn't matter. My devices can all see each other (if they are supposed to) regardless of which band they are connected to. My son's PC with an older 2.4 GHz only Wi-Fi adaptor can see the printer on my PC connected via the 5 GHz band.

The router does broadcast 2.4, but my Smart Home App that is required for the Smart Plug is not finding it.

I have gone into the router-network but I cannot find anything that can be changed other than turning guest wifi off or on. I understand what you are saying about the SSID, but I cannot see where to do this. I do apologize If I am not clear. I am far from being an expert, but I am pretty good at following step by step directions. Just none of the ones I have been following have worked. Appreciate your suggestions.

What brand and model is your router, and which brand and model is your smart plug?

Someone else may need to step in about this since I've not had experience with that specific kind of thing.

I do have a ton of devices - several handheld and console gaming devices (all Nintendos), 5 phones, 3 tablets, 4 computers, a couple TVs, 4 Fire Sticks for TVs, 2 Echos, one one Ring doorbell device. All are connected by either 2.4 or 5 GHz. No issues with seeing any device that needs to be seen by any other device on the other band. Because the router itself is the common connection. Even for the time I had one computer directly connected to the router with the ethernet cable.

I'm amazed my router can even keep up, but it chugs right along. Less than half of those devices actually have a constant data flow. Most are just connected to be connected.

But no smart plugs anywhere for me, so I don't know if there could be some particular condition that kind of device requires.

However, I still don't think that should matter. If the app is on the phone, and the phone is on the network (regardless of which band), the app should see the smart plug as long as the smart plug is on the network. Aren't these things supposed to work even if you leave the house and the phone is only on your cellular network, once they initially see and connect with each other?

Have you tried just using the app to find the plug? Is the app giving you some kind of error message about which band the phone is connected to?

Maybe double check the settings in smart home app or delete then add again?

The whole purpose of the app is to find the plug and connect it to the wifi. That's why I don't know what is going on. I am going to uninstall the app and start over. Thanks for your help. We'll see what happens.

Maybe make sure your router settings for the 5 and the 2.4 radios are not setup to be "smart", by broadcasting both those as one single common SSID.

Just to be clearer however, are you having problems with your phone and the app finding the plug's own initial setup SSID, or are you having problems getting the plug to connect to your home Wi-Fi's 2.4 SSID?

By the way, some of these smart plugs and their "helpful setup apps" are actually more confusing than they have to be. So, don't be alarmed if some of it doesn't make perfect sense to you.

For what it's worth - mine works perfectly fine set up as a "smart" configuration. I have one device that still requires 2.4 and it connects just fine and other devices can communicate with it.
@slider547 - if your phone can't "see" the devices to set them up I suggest seeing if there's some way to reset the devices, maybe they think they're configured for some reason? I don't feel like the router is coming into play just yet if you haven't gotten a chance to configure the device to connect to your WiFi.
