Does Gingerbread back up apps?

I was under the impression that GB backed up your apps to Google. Am I wrong? I took my phone in today due to lockups (it was locked up when I handed it to the rep) and they replaced it. I thought when I logged into Google and the market it would automatically reinstall my apps. Did I get that wrong?

Only if you ask it to - the setting is under Settings -> Privacy - Back up my data.

The market will reguardless remember your paid apps, but not your free apps unless you select Back up my data.

Yeah, thanks. I knew about the market, just wasn't sure about GB backing up to Google.
