can i unlock my phone to use with another carrier? I have been shopping around and found simple moble has unlimited everything including data for $40/ month

In short...maybe. You'll need to do research on the new carrier and see if they use the same Mobile network as Verizon. In this case, CDMA. After that, you'll have to search around and see if there is a process to flash the phone from Verizon to the new carrier. It could be possible, but very difficult and not worthwhile.
