Contact phone number formatting

Curious question. There are many ways to enter phone numbers for contacts. What is the proper format that Android recommends for phone numbers (US)?

1. 1-000-000-0000
2. 000-000-0000
3. 10000000000
4. 0000000000

I've found that calls on my Inspire will work with any of those 4 ways, but when I'm adding a contact I use format 2. It just looks cleaner. Plus, you missed a couple. I've also seen +1-000-000-0000 and +10000000000. That's the international format for US numbers. Unnecessary unless you're calling the US from outside the country.
