Problems Connecting Arkham City Xbox 360 Wired Controller to Nexus 7

Knowing the Nexus 7 supported wired xbox 360 controllers out of the box, I picked up an Arkham City controller that was on sale. I also purchased the usb-micro usb adapter. When I plug the controller in, my home button flashes but is not recognized in any of the settings or games. I tried with games that are known to support the controller

My guess is this is because it's not an official controller. Is there any way to work around this? While I'd prefer not to root, I'm open to the idea if that grants the connectivity I'm looking for.
