Notification sound question

Hi, i just made the switch from iphone to android. I downloaded handcent and i was was wondering if i can get the notification sound to only beep when i have not opened the thread. Once im in the thread..the iphone usually just vibrates with every text i get while im still inside... but no tone unless i exit messaging and its a new text message. I am not sure if you guys get what i am saying, but i dont want it to ring everytime i get a msg while im in still in the text app. Thanks.
