Why doesn't the Play Store download multiple apps at once? The Amazon AppStore has no issue downloading multiple apps at once.

I read on an xda post that I should have no problem after ICS downloading multiple apps at the same time, but I have found that untrue. I'm talking about multiple devices. OG Atrix, One X, S2, S3, S4, Note 2, Nexus 7. Using stock software, CM or other ROMs; Google Play will only download one app at a time which makes changing to a new phone incredibly time consuming.

Was that xda post correct or can no one download multiple apps at a time from the Play Store?

I believe Google Play has always been limited to downloading one app at a time. If you update all, you'll see the progress bar for all of them, but only one will be downloading at any given moment. My guess is they do this to minimize system slowdown. It's true that Amazon Appstore will download multiple apps at once, but I've found the Appstore to be consistently slow and kludgy, so it's not a real advantage to me.

I got my Nexus 7 back from ASUS last night and it took about 3 hours to download all the apps, because it would download 1 at a time, install the app, then download the next and son on. Very odd.

I just tried it on my S4. I picked two apps. The first one began downloading while the second showed the blue bar. Immediately after the first installed, the second app began downloading. Is there a setting that I need to change to download multiple at once?

Welcome to Android Central! As discussed previously, Google Play limits the actual download/installation process to one app at a time. I don't think there's a workaround. Amazon Appstore will download multiple apps at a time, but the installation process still has to be one by one.
