Music shows 'Unknown Artist'

Can anyone shed light on why my most of my music tracks are shown on my HTC Desire (Android 2.2) as having Unknown Artist? They are shown correctly on my PC using Windows Media Player and I have simply copied the tracks to the phone's SD card within Artist/Album folders. The file properties 'Artists' and 'Album Artist' are both correctly set. The problem is the same if I use the native Android music player or doubleTwist.

Any suggestions please?

I had this same problem, which I fixed by downloading mp3 tagger on my desktop, mounting the SD card and fixing the Id3v2 tag...and added album art work. apparently Android doesn't read regular Id3 tags (which is what your seeing on Windows media player) only Id3v2 tags work.

if you use the Lithium music player you can edit the music tags directly from your phone.
I also second what area52 suggested about downloading mp3tagger.

Thanks very much for these tips. My problem seemed to stem from using .wma format tracks. When I re-ripped a CD in MP3 format and transferred those tracks to my phone everything worked fine.
