Screen artifacts

Hi folks. Some artifacts have recently appeared on my screen (motorola droid x) see pic. The pattern is on every desktop, as I scroll around it stays in place. Has anybody ever seen this before? Is this the end for my phone? The phone works fine in every other respect. Can it be fixed? Thanks.

I would try a factory reset to see if that by chance corrects it.

That doesn't look good. Have you taken it to the store to see if they can fix it?

Thanks. That's a last resort for me, as my Verizon store is very busy. I would rather go to the dentist if you know what I mean.

The picture isn't great, but it looks to me like either a broken screen or something burned into the screen. If it's either of those you need a new screen. The screen is only about $15 (look on eBay), but you'd probably have to get someone to put it in for you.
