What does that mean? The S3 (running 4.3) is not rooted, not flashed, not damaged. So, what does MODIFIED mean here?

I may have disabled a file i shouldn't have. (I have disabled a bunch of apps in the Manage Apps setting.)

I've been re - enabling apps one by one, but it's tedious.

Any ideas about what app could have caused the message? Or about what else might be the problem?

Thanks.

It's likely the disabling of the apps. If that doesn't work, the only way to fix it is by flashing stock firmware onto the phone. That will delete all of your data so make sure to back it up

You 'd think that flashing firmware would be considered modifying. Don't i need to be rooted in order to flash stiff on my S3?

Backup your data and factory reset. Try to install the update afterwards and see if that works. All your apps should be restored and there should be no issues with updating if you are completely stock, not rooted.

Sorry for the late reply. Flashing stock firmware can be done through Odin, in which case you don't need to be rooted, and no it's not considered modifying.

Thanks muchly to both of you. Tomorrow i do a full backup and then do a factory reset. If that doesn't work, I'll move onto Odin. I'm actually looking forward to all this mess because the S3 is full of file fragments and other junk. Thanks again.

I found the cause. That phone doesn't have a sim card. Thanks, you guys, for all the help.
