Uninstalling apps without disabling your phone?

I know that is a weird topic, but I have had it seriously happen to me. A couple years ago I had a Motorola Triumph through Virgin Mobile and I deleted a few apps. After deleting three or four of them my phone could no longer make or receive calls or texts or do any data. It was basically useless. I didn't delete any pre-installed apps. I now have a Samsung Galaxy 4G Lite through Virgin and would like to free up some space, but am worried about the same thing happening. Is there some trick to do it correctly or was it a problem with the phone or even Virgin?

It's hard to answer that question without knowing exactly what apps you deleted the last time. Had you rooted that Triumph? Is it possible that it was rooted, and you unwittingly deleted a system-critical app, thinking it wasn't a pre-installed one?

By delete do you mean you actually uninstalled them where you would have to confirm this through the package installer, or did you perhaps just disable them?
