Disabling In-Call Keypad Lock

I read mixed opinions on this feature but personally I find the requirement to double tap the screen after every paused keypad entry particularly annoying especially when on voicemail and one ends up making excessive number key taps. The lack of an option to disable it natively is a disappointment. Can anyone suggest an app for this? I tried Keyguard Disabler but that doesn't do it.

I tried ShakeAwake, but it completely failed to work on my Hero - maybe it works on other Android phones though.

I didn't know about the double tap though - been pressing Home. Will have to try that next time so thanks for the tip.
