How can I fix my headphone connection problems?

I have a moto g phone and recently the headphone connection has been awful. If it moves (even in my pocket as i walk) the sound cuts off. Another weird side effect of this, is that google listen activates and shouts in my ear that it didn't understand what I just said.

Is there settings on my phone that I can fiddle with to fix this or is there dirt in the connection? The headphones are fine in other devices. If there is dirt in the connection, is there a way of cleaning it?

Thanks.

Having the phone in your pocket with the plug plugged in probably keeps wiggling the plug, which bends the contacts in the jack. making the connection intermittent. If you're going to use the phone while it's in your pocket you could try a headphone with a flat plut, but that might still cause problems (even after you get the jack replaced). The best solution is a Bluetooth headset.

If you keep using it your way, you're going to keep replacing headphone jacks.
