How can I know what is triggering an app?

I have a severe battery drain issue (forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/230456-phone-app-drains-battery-2.html#post4358867) when the "Phone" app eats up all the power. I'm not even using the phone or getting any calls, so I'm wondering what exactly is triggering the Phone app.

I've installed the GSam Battery Monitor and I see the Phone app draining the battery and what packages it includes, and even when I force stop it, it's back alive after a while. So I'd like to know what exactly is using it.

Any hints?

The Phone app has to run in the background or you couldn't receive incoming calls. It shouldn't be using much battery, though, unless you have a weak signal from the tower. (In which case you're using the wrong carrier.)
