Rooting w/ No Custom ROM - increasing internal app space possible?

My title says it all. I think I can make it through the rooting process as I had a Nexus One before my iPhone 4 & now have a Nexus S. the N1 necessitated a custom ROM imho.

Soooo ... if I do the rooting process giving SU access/permission, can I repartition the internal storage space for my Nexus S without adding a custom ROM? I'd like to have about 3-4 gb just for apps. Yes, I know this seems excessive so don't flame me but it's personal preference. If the majority of app developers allowed apps2sd, this would not be an issue but most do not I find.

Can anyone shed some light on how to do this if it's even possible? I'd still like to receive OTA updates for the Nexus S but simply won't to re-allot the internal storage to my liking!
