how do i enable data service

I was sent a photo via text. a download icon shows up, upon pressing it is says 'data service is disabled for the current SIM. Please enable data service to retry'

It depends on your phone, but usually there should be a MOBILE DATA switch somewhere in your settings; in most phones it can be found in the same place where you check your data usage.

Also, does your phone have mobile data active from the carrier and you have the correct MMS configuration? MMS travels through mobile data, so if you don't have a data plan or your carrier hasn't configured your phone for MMS, it won't be able to send/receive them. If it's a configuration issue, they can usually give that to you over the phone and some can even auto-configure your phone with a text message.

Also check with your carrier if there will be any extra costs associated with sending/receiving MultiMedia Messages.
