I use Android 4.2.2. I have three apps that are supposed to let me know me know when I receive a new message - Facebook messenger, Gmail and Skype. Over WLAN I get notifications for all of them instantly.

Notification for Facebook messenger also works fine over 3G.

I don't receive notification from Gmail and Skype over 3G. But if I run them and exit them, I get notifications normally afterwards.
Any idea how to fix it?

Try wiping the cache partition: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sam...2-s3-tab2.html

Will this leave SMSes, address book and accounts intact?

Yes. The cache partition only holds temporary data.

Not sure what the next step should be, besides backing up your data and trying a factory reset.

I was checking up apps that were loaded and I discovered that Facebook messenger is started in the background when phone is booting. That's why I receive notification from it. Skype and Gmail are not started in the background by Android. Any way for them to be started in the background while phone is booting?

That's strange--it shouldn't matter. Gmail should still be able to notify you of new mail, even if it doesn't open automatically upon startup.
