As you see on the emails you can swipe left and it deletes for you. Is there not something similar for msgs? Do I "have" to tick and select delete?

Most, if not all, stock messaging applications don't allow you to do this. You can, however, install a third-party application (I'm using Textra) that allows you to do this. If you haven't already tried it, give Textra a try. Plenty other apps exists which are good alternatives to the stock application with this feature, so take a look in the Play Store and see what suits your needs.
