will a sim from another carrier work to activate my iphone 5?

so yesterday i bought an iphone 5 from kijiji, and it needs a sim to be activated. its locked to a company but im not quite sure which one. and i cant find that out until i activate the phone. i feel like im stuck in a loophole. can i activate the phone using a sim that might not be from the same carrier?

No, unless by chance you choose a SIM for the right carrier.
