i locked my tablet using the device manager. Can I unlock it without having to do a factory reset

My granddaughter wanted to play with my tablet so I created a restricted user and downloaded games that she could play and created a password so she couldnt access my files. Then I deleted the restricted user but the password didnt go away. I couldnt remember what it was so I used device manager to change the password which locked my tablet.

Do you mean it said a password already existed so it wouldn't accept the new one. That has been happening recently.
If you didn't put a different pin or password via ADM, try that.

Otherwise try continuing to enter any pin/password on the device, forgetting ADM. It may ask you eventually to enter a Username and password instead, which really means your entering your full Gmail address (username) and your account password.

If it makes you wait 30 seconds every 10 tries or so, it usually will ask for the above.
Keep an eye that it may say it will reset if you fail one more time.
It all depends on the device.
