Why is there no source on phone or Internet about what an App Does?

I have spent many, many hours trying to find information about the hundreds of apps on my Moto-x. Granted, you can find out all kinds of technical crap, but can NEVER determine just what an app is supposed to do. What is it for? What is its purpose on my phone?

Even on the Internet it is very difficult to find such information outside Google resources. Can't use Google to find such information of course, because they leave critical information out or simply lie about what their numerous insidious, intrusive apps do to the user.

Any help?

If it's apps you're downloading apps, read their descriptions. If you're talking about pre-installed apps, what you're asking is akin to opening Windows Task Manager and trying to figure out what all the various DLL programs and such do. Chances are you're not going to figure them out, but they are there to help the system run. There's nothing inherently insidious about the built in system apps.
