Why can't I no longer delete photos from Google Photo?

Can no longer delete photos from Google Photo

Used to be able to select photos from Google photo and delete. Now I get message that it "can't access photos on SD card-open Gallery to delete." Moved photos to phone memory and get same "SD card" message. I do not want to use Gallery.

While I've seen this question a couple of times, I have not seen an answer. This began several weeks ago: Samsung Note 4.

I agree that an answer to this is hard to find. I have found Google Photos, following its recent updates, quite confusing as to (a) where the auto-backups go, and (b) how to delete anything using my phone. Deleting from the camera roll is straightforward, but deleting from Google Photos is best done on a computer.
