    It's just a phone that is not electronically tied to - 'locked' - to a particular service provider. An unlocked phone is free to be used on any compatible network.

    Welcome to AC.

    One which is not tied to one particular network or carrier. An unlocked phone can be used with the network or carrier of your choice, and will also be free of the additional software - sometimes referred to as 'bloatware' - often installed on the carrier-locked devices.
