Need phone ideas. Which phone to use while in Australia for a month

My friend is traveling to Australia for a month. She lives in Austin, Texas. The T-Mobile coverage here in Austin is excellent. She just finished a contract with Verizon and wants to switch to T-Mobile.

So... knowing that the next round of badass phones comes out around May, she would prefer to wait until then to invest in a high end Android phone.

While in Australia, she would like to have cellular coverage BUT could make due with a phone that has WiFi so she could use Skype or WiFi calling.

Any suggestions?

If she just needs voice coverage/2G, any GSM phone will work. If she wants 3G, I believe the Australlian carriers use AT&T 3G bands. If not, they use the same as Europe, so pretty much any AT&T phone will work.
