Why is my phone not notifying me when I receive a text message?

Why is my phone not notifying me when i recieve a text message?

Unless my screen is on my phone doesn't alert me when I receive a new message. I have to look to see if I have a new message by going into them and looking. Ive tried to look into settings but just can not figure it out!

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone?

Open the Messaging app, tap Menu>Settings, and look for the Notification options. Make sure they're on.

Are any power saving modes turned on? If so, turn them off. Also, go to Settings>Data Usage​, and make sure you aren't Restricting Background Data.
